APIK’s KIP2 Safety Beacon

The KIP2 Safety Beacon by APIK: Innovation in connectivity

APIK’s KIP2 Safety Beacon is a personal tracking device designed to be the ultimate in recovery solutions. It overcomes the challenges in coverage and reliability by leveraging direct-to-satellite and LoRa® connectivity technology alongside its terrestrial capabilities. As a LoRa®-enabled device, the KIP2 Beacon integrates EchoStar Mobile’s direct-to-satellite connectivity and terrestrial services to achieve ubiquitous coverage and resilient connectivity.

With a push button alert system, individuals carrying the KIP2 Beacon can send a distress signal anywhere in Europe, regardless of location or coverage availability. From remote areas in the mountains or forests to locations offshore or even underwater, any individual is findable.

The KIP2 Beacon connects directly to a FIND-R device (carried by helicopter search and rescue teams) to identify an individual’s position quickly. It then guides rescue teams to individuals in danger within minutes. Even without a distress signal activated or coverage available, the innovative technology of the KIP2 Beacon can provide guidance on an individual’s location to enable recovery.

Key connectivity benefits of the KIP2 Safety Beacon include:

  • Reliable transmission to recovery services anywhere in Europe, even in the most remote regions
  • Device location via a FIND-R unit with up to a 12 km range, enabling recovery in less than 15 minutes
  • Exceptional precision with finding accuracy of one metre should the victim be in a buried situation
  • SOS signal transmission between the KIP2 Beacon and FIND-R, independent of GPS or satellite providing all weather all situation recovery.
  • The device will additionally connect to the user’s phone via Bluetooth and leverage the cellular network if coverage is available for more frequent position updates

There are also many practical advantages of the KIP2 Safety Beacon, such as its:

  • Small and lightweight proportions, with fully integrated antennas
  • Low power requirement, with running times of one month in low-power mode or 48 hours when on the move
  • Low cost, with no additional infrastructure required
  • Ability to switch to terrestrial mode when inside (without sky view), saving power and costs
  • IP67-rating and fully waterproofed design
